- Abstract:
- At lakes where disturbance makes other climate proxies unsuitable delta 18 O (diatom) signatures from sediments provide qualitative palaeoclimate records of temperature. Two archived annually laminated lake cores from Sweden will be used to statistically examine the relationship between meteorological/climate records and delta 18 O (diatom) for the past 100 years. Climate in central Sweden is strongly modulated by the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Scandinavian pattern and our results are therefore likely to be representative of the wider European region. By establishing exactly how delta 18 O (diatom) reflects local and regional climate signals we will provide the basis for the development of a climate transfer function potentially applicable at a range of sites and timescales thus extending our ability to provide accurate palaeoclimate reconstructions for climate modellers.
