Abstract:
We will use cosmogenic exposure age methods to date undated glacial limits of between 25 ka and 1 Ma in southern Patagonia. The mid-late Quaternary glacial record of the region is well preserved and extensive. It reveals uniquely aspects of climate coupling between the North and South Hemispheres. Cosmogenic dating offers a means of constraining pre-25ka glacial limits if erosion rates are low and exposure histories are uncomplicated. We will determine the nuclide concentration of a number of radiogenic isotopes (10Be, 36Cl, 26Al) in 21 surface samples to quantify erosion rates, evaluate the coherency of exposure history, and obtain dates. We will assess the overall potential for use of technique to date the mid-late Quaternary surfaces in southern Patagonia in the light of these results and with local collaboration.
