Abstract:
The global cycle of metals (alkali, alkali earth and transition) is complex involving many chemical processes (e.g. redox, dissolution). Surface sorption of metals to surface of fine gained particles control their transport and distribution in many natural systems. Our aim is to use carefully controlled laboratory experiments to gain a detailed mechanistic understanding of how Mg, Ni, Cu and Cu isotopes fractionate during sorption process and how the sorption mechanism (e.g. outer or inner sphere) and the chemistry of the substrate (e.g. goethite, FeOOH or kaolinite Al4Si4O10(OH)8) effect the direction and magnitude of the fractionation. This data will then be compared to data taken from field samples in two different settings (river-estuary and acid mine drainage) to determine the sorption behaviour of different metals in the contaminated and uncontaminated natural hydrological system.
