Abstract:
We have recently identified a previously unrecognised type of sector zoning in metamorphic tourmalines in rocks from the French Massif Central and the Tauern Window in the Alps. This zoning resembles hourglass sector zoning found in magmatic amphiboles. The sector zoning can be used to determine element partitioning among different sectors within the same growth zones. This partitioning will be a function of only P and T, since the chemical environment is the same for all sectors. The crux of this proposal is to attempt to calibrate and test the T-P dependence inter-sector partitioning and to characterise the major- and trace-element partitioning among sectors. If successful, we will have a tourmaline geothermometer, which we plan to use to work out T, P and relative time histories for and monitor local chemical variations in areas under study.
