Abstract:
We will use recently developed behavioural and physiological bioassays to guide the purification and identification of a female produced sex pheromone in Carcinus maenas. Almost unlimited access to sexually active crabs for bioassays and pheromone collection (using thousands rather then a few individuals to prepare a sample) through a collaboration (sponsorship) with a commercial 'peeler crab' farm, a recently developed purification strategy (SPE) and access to advanced analytics (LC-MSn, MaldiTOF, NMR) will enable a realistic opportunity to identify for the first time a crustacean sex pheromone. Understanding the chemical basis of reproduction will lead to important insights into the forces driving ecology and evolution in future larger follow up studies.
