Abstract:
Every year thousands of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) migrate from foraging grounds along the Brazilian coast, across at least 2200 km of the Atlantic Ocean, to mate and nest at Ascension Island. Charles Darwin was one of the first biologists to wonder how this feat of navigation was completed (Nature 7, 360; 1873) and the question continues to receive high profile discussion (Nature 423, 128; 2003). We will test the idea that turtles use wind-borne cues to locate the island, by observing the approach direction of undisturbed animals migrating to Ascension at the start of the nesting season.
