Abstract:
Foliar endophyte diversity and metabolic activity appear to be high in herbaceous plants (compared with grasses), but the interactions between these fungi and insects in natural communities are entirely unknown. This pilot study aims to determine the factors affecting fungal diversity within the foliar tissues of Cirsium arvense and how this can be manipulated. The role of phytophagous insects is emphasised, by studying insect effects on fungal transmission and occurrence within galls of Urophora cardui.
