Abstract:
Ultrafine particles in the coastal environment have been the subject of considerable interest. It has been recently proposed that photochemical production of condensable iodine oxides is responsible for their formation. During a recent field project on the west coast of Ireland, the UMIST group found the first direct evidence for the production of iodine-containing particles from Laminaria sp. macroalgae in the intertidal zone. It is proposed to study the system in a laboratory program to investigate particle concentration, composition and physical properties and by comparison with particle generation in the photolysis of isolated precursors, infer mechanistic information. The study will employ existing UFAM instrumentation and the efforts of research students involved in laboratory use of this equipment and in allied investigations into iodine photochemistry.
