Abstract:
The so-called '10-? phase', nominally Mg3Si4O10(OH)2.xH2O, is considered to be a potentially very significant player in the water budget of 'coo!', older (> 50 Ma) subduction zones. It also serves as a useful model for examining the mechanisms by which structural molecular H2O can be incorporated into high-pressure phases. However, its structure and water content are unknown, but the concensus is that it is a structural variant of talc with interlayer H2O. The proposed research will determine the complete structure of the 10-A phase, including H2O positions, water content (xH2O) and its hydrogen bonding topology. Experiments will be performed at 10K, 298 K and 5 GPa (at 298 K) for a synthetic sample using neutron powder diffraction.
