Fossil turbulence in small lakes?

Grant Award

Abstract:
Current lake ecology models do not take into account fossil turbulence. Recognition of this process could significantly change the calculation of planktonic cycling rates. This project will measure fossil turbulence in a test case small lake and indicate how it affects plankton cycling. Vertical microscale temperature profiles will be taken in a wide variety of lake mixing states. The profiles will be analysed using turbulence activity diagrams, thus identifying occurrences of fossil turbulence. Calculations of the plankton cycling eddy scales will be made both with and without recognition of fossil turbulence. Comparisons of the results will give an indication of the alterations necessary to models to take into account this phenomenon.
