Abstract:
We propose to make field measurements of the brine volume of sea ice as it forms and evolves in a newly formed lead. A new instrument for this purpose will be developed and deployed in open water created in fast ice within a fjord in Svalbard. The field study will complement controlled laboratory experiments and the development of new theoretical models of internal sea-ice structure and dynamics. The results of the field study will provide new, unique data sets of sea-ice properties and, in conjunction with the laboratory experiments, will constrain the mathematical modelling, allowing it to be extended appropriately for the natural environment. This will provide significant input into efforts to parameterise sea ice and the brine fluxes emanating from it in Coupled Global Circulation Models.
