Abstract:
Previously, we have recorded significantly enhanced mineralisation of 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate) in the rhizosphere of Trifolium pratense. To test the hypothesis that specific compounds released by roots of T. pratense stimulate 2,4-D biodegradation by acting as inducers of the pathway, we propose to identify the comparative significance of rhizodeposit fractions (exudate/root debris/compounds released during root turnover) on: (a) 2,4-D degradation rate in soil and (b) transcription of the 2,4-D dioxygenase gene in batch studies. Comparisons between soils (pristine vs. previously exposed to 2,4-D), and classes of 2,4-D-degrading microorganisms (copiotrophic beta and gamma proteobacteria vs. oligotrophic alpha proteobacteria) will be made.
