Abstract:
This small research grant proposal aims to (a) develop new empirical models for the retrieval of peak, mean and zero-upcrossing wave period from satellite altimeter data, (b) validate these models using independent collocated altimeter/buoy data, (c) compute global monthly climatologies of altimeter wave period and compare those with existing wave model based climatologies, and (d) disseminate these results in the refereed literature. We will exploit existing datasets of satellite altimeter measurements collocated with in situ wave period and wave spectra measurements by buoys in the open ocean, produced at SOC under ESA and INTAS funding. These data indicate a clear dependence of nadir altimeter signals on ocean wave period.
