Abstract:
Test the utility of fluorescence parameters from Hansatech HandyPEA (1 sec duration Kautsky Effect for Fo,Fv,Fm, JIP analysis) and Walz Phyto-PAM (Fo,Fv,Fm, ETR/PAR giving a,Ik & ETRmax) to monitor marine phytoplankton nutrient status and growth rate (competence). Algae grown at 2 contrasting irradiances with N,P or Si limitation tested at 0, 6 and 11 hrs in the L-phase each day from exponential to near stationary phase. Subsamples also supplied with the limiting nutrient (for N, as NO3- or NH4+) and the consequences for fluorescence tested over following 60 min. The ability of PAM to correctly deconvolute the signals of mixed cyano', chloro' and chromophytes will be considered in comparison with the responses of the separate suspensions.
