Abstract:
Biologists have long pondered on the adaptive significance of melanism in insects. Recent research has focussed on the strong correlation in many insect species between melanism and resistance to parasites and pathogens. Here, we propose to use selection experiments to examine the genetic correlations between melanism and: (i) immune function, (ii) life-history traits and (iii) disease resistance. This approach to examining the adaptive significance of melanism will not only facilitate further examination of the 'disease resistance' hypothesis for the evolution of melanism, but will also allow us to examine the costs of melanism and disease resistance.
