Abstract:
It is proposed to investigate the effect of chemical modification of mixed organic/inorganic aerosols on their condensational growth properties. Sub-micron aerosol will be generated using a custom-built nebulizer, size selected with a differential mobility analyser (DMA) and chemically modified by exposure to photochemically generated OH radicals to mimic ageing in the atmosphere. Condensational growth of the modified aerosol will be followed using a second DMA. Information gained will be used to assess the radiative properties of mixed aerosols in the troposphere. Resources are sought to purchase the DMA needed for size selection of the aerosols. The remainder of the equipment and post-doctoral salary needed to carry out these experiments will be provided from other sources.
