Abstract:
We propose to analyse water samples collected on a recent cruise aboard RRS Charles Darwin during March-April 2002 across the Indian Ocean for helium-3 and tritium concentrations. The water samples to be analysed come from the mid-ocean section along 32 degrees S between 50 degrees E and 80 degrees E which was not sampled during the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. Age determinations from the combined helium-tritium concentrations represent a key element in understanding the decadal changes in thermocline waters observed during the Darwin cruise. The helium-tritium concentrations will also complement CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and carbon system measurements made on this comprehensive hydrographic section across the southern boundary of the Indian Ocean.
