Abstract:
Anabranching (anastomosing) rivers are characterised by multiple channels which divide and rejoin around semi-permanent ridges or islands. Previous studies of anabranching rivers in the arid and seasonal tropical regions of Australia have shown that riparian vegetation (trees and shrubs) plays a key role in the initiation, development and stability of the dividing ridges and islands but currently there are few quantitative data regarding the interactions between flow and sediment transport, vegetation colonization and growth, and anabranch morphology. This project will develop a new cellular model to explore quantitatively these interactions and to test current theories of anabranching river development. This novel model will be parameterised and tested using data collected from anabranching Magela Creek, northern Australia.
