Abstract:
Sunlight falling onto snowpacks is known to photochemically produce gaseous oxides of nitrogen. The proposer has measured UV actinic fluxes in Arctic snowpacks and, with simple radiation transfer code, has predicted chemical fluxes of nitrogen oxides out of the snowpack. The proposer now wishes to (a) Evaluate the contribution snowpack evolution of gaseous nitrogen oxides contributes to the United Kingdom's nitrogen oxide budget, (b) develop truly portable techniques for measuring actinic fluxes in snowpack, (c) provide a radiation-transfer model tailored to calculating photolysis lifetimes of compounds contained within a British snowpack. Whilst a valuable project in its own right, the exercise will also serve as a pump-priming project to allow the author to be in a good position for applying for grants to attend Polar and European field surveys of snowpacks.
