Abstract:
Perna perna shell sections contain tidal growth increments whose elemental composition will be analysed by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Tidal increments in calcein marked shells from rocky shores in S. Africa exposed to upwelling cooler seawater and from those not subject to upwelling, will be compared with in situ sea water temperatures taken from shore deployed temperature loggers. From the date of marking, each increment will be assigned a date and increments deposited during the upwelling periods analysed using LA-ICP-MS. Increments deposited over the same period in mussels not exposed to upwelling will be compared to elucidate whether the elemental composition of the shells record upwelling.
