Abstract:
Cutting-edge CT, 3-D reconstruction and visualisation techniques will be used to investigate the internal structure of the braincase and ear region of Archaeopteryx lithographica, the earliest bird - a key fossil in the testing of cladistic hypotheses concerning the origin and evolution of birds. Hitherto, unstudiable morphology of the pneumatic system of the ear region and the structure of the inner ear will provide a wealth of new character information to test phylogenies and the sequence of development of the avian ear. Data sets for significant fossil bird specimens will be acquired to provide a comparative morphological series from Archaeopteryx to modern birds. In addition to the discrete nature of the project, it will make available new and important underpinning data for use in phylogenetic and palaeobiological studies.
