Abstract:
The proposal is for proof-of-concept funding to develop a new method to test hypotheses about the foraging behaviour and diet of grey seals. We have already used the method to test similar hypotheses in Antarctic fur seals and the next stage is to develop the technique for use on seals that cannot be recaptured reliably and in which there is a greater need for more detailed knowledge of foraging behaviour and diet. We will build a video camera, satellite location tag, time-depth recorder and VHF tag into a single housing. The design will be tested with a remote-release system in the SMRU seal hold facility at St Andrews and then also in the field.
