Abstract:
Until now, rocks that deformed under low temperatures in upper-crustal levels have proven difficult to date by isotopic means, due to their fine-grain size and the mixture of detrital and new metamorphic minerals. We present a novel solution to this problem by performing Ar-Ar laserprobe dating on syn-kinematic white micas from a slate belt, which crystallised in the strain shadows around pyritised graptolites. This method circumvents problems encountered by all previous attempts to date low-temperature deformation, and a preliminary dataset from epizonal samples yields ages with remarkable precision (396?1.4 Ma 2 standard deviation). We propose to develop the technique further by experimenting with lower temperature (anchizonal) material, and by attempting to use these strain-fringes to extract strain rates, by performing in situ UV laserprobe Ar/Ar analyses across strain-fringes.
