Abstract:
The impact of global climate change upon the distribution and magnitude of precipitation as modelled by General Circulation Models suggests an enhanced hydrological cycle. This takes the form of increased rainfall variability, leading to the increased occurrence of droughts and floods. Comparisons between GCM analysis and satellite data however highlight significant differences between the two. Furthermore, comparison between two long-term satellite rainfall climatologies indicates substantial differences between them despite having similar data sources. It is therefore essential that we understand the spatial and temporal variations in rainfall systems and their affect on rainfall retrievals algorithms.
