Abstract:
Attempts to quantify net carbon production in the oceanic water column suffer from a poor understanding of plankton respiration, particularly that in the mesopelagic zone. Recent reports ascribe up to 50 percent of water column respiration to this zone, which would create a major imbalance in the oceanic carbon budget. Mesopelagic respiration rates are derived mainly from ETS measurements, a method for which accuracy is difficult to ascertain. We shall overcome this calibration problem by collecting a unique set of paired ETS and deltaO2 measurements through the water column. We will therefore be able to test the hypothesis that mesopelagic respiration is comparable to euphotic zone respiration.
