Abstract:
Multi-frequency acoustic backscatter, used successfully in sandy marine environments to measure profiles of suspended sediment concentration (and transport when combined with co-located velocity information), will be extended to muddy environments. Work previously conducted in the laboratory by James (1999) will be developed using both field measurements in a muddy estuary and in the laboratory with samples from the field, with the objective of improving our theoretical and practical understanding of the backscatter of sound from mud.
