Abstract:
Sperm abnormality is a widespread but poorly-understood phenomenon. Elevated proportions of abnormal sperm are associated with compromised fertility in animals and humans, and endangered mammals with abnormal sperm may suffer direct reproductive costs. Sperm abnormalities may result from depleted heterozygosity through inbreeding. This project will examine whether inbreeding generates increased abnormalities in natural and laboratory populations of the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus. We will recover and analyse sperm (and other reproductive traits) from natural and domestic populations that vary widely in heterozygosity. Genetic screening using established polymorphic microsatellite loci will enable a direct test of the effects of natural and experimental inbreeding on the production of abnormal sperm in a mammalian model.
