- Abstract:
- Arachnids are the most diverse and abundant predators on land today. A complete picture of Mesozoic terrestrial ecosystem function could not be assembled until now because data on the major predators - the spiders - are missing. The objectives of this study are to extract the highest quality morphological information from newly discovered Mesozoic spiders using innovative techniques in reflected-light microscopy; palaeontological data will be combined with morphological and molecular studies on recent arachnids in an integrated phylogenetic analysis; and palaeoecological results will be combined with palaeoentomological data to understand Mesozoic terrestrial ecosystems and how they survived global extinction events.
