Abstract:
The diversity and biogeography of benthic foraminifera, a dominant deep-sea taxon, are poorly understood at both morphological and molecular genetic levels. To explore these issues, samples will be collected in the deep Weddell and Scotia Seas during the international ANDEEP project. Using molecular and morphological approaches we will: 1) compare species diversity at different sites, 2) search for cryptic species, 3) compare similar N. Atlantic, Arctic and Antarctic morphospecies, 4) establish phylogenetic relationships between faunas from shallow- and deep-water Antarctic habitats and from the Arctic and Antarctic, 5) search for naked (non-testate) foraminifera. Results will be relevant to major international biodiversity initiatives.
