Abstract:
The Holocene (less than 11.5 ka) is generally considered to be a period of relatively stable climate. However, there are now indications of millennial-scale (approx 1500 year) climate cycles, recorded in the high and low-latitudes of the Atlantic and polar regions. Records of such events in the mid-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere are sparse. We have undertaken preliminary investigations of terrestrial records in New Zealand that support the existence of similar-style cycles through the Holocene, though of unknown periodicity. For the purposes of this grant, it is proposed to undertake a comprehensive dating and multi-proxy study of high-resolution terrestrial sites (35-52 degrees S) and compare to the newly-constructed New Zealand tree-ring records. The results will be used to investigate the timing and amplitude of such events, providing a context for contemporary climate change.
