Abstract:
This project will provide new methods and data on dust fluxes, mineralogy and provenance, by testing new magnetic dust proxies for two selected deep-sea cores, T88-9P (N Atlantic) and MD88-791 (Antarctic continental shelf). Knowledge of the mineralogy and flux of dust in natural climate archives is critical; Fe-bearing dust may play an active role in climate change. We will quantify superparamagnetic ferrimagnetic (SPFM) and (canted) antiferromagnetic (SPAM) components of the sediments, using our JREI-funded superconducting magnetometry system, a 7T MPMS XL. Aeolian, soil-derived dust particles, likely to contain bioavailable Fe, may be SP-enriched compared with detritally-sourced components. We will test our magnetic methods against leaf wax alkanes in our N Atlantic core, and then extend the analysis to the critically important Southern Ocean sediment record.
