- Arctic ecosystems are sensitive to climate change and there is already substantial evidence for warming in many arctic regions. We will use palaeolimnological methods to study the effect of 20th century climate warming on freshwater lakes from northeastern European Russia. Changes in ice cover, stratification and water column mixing in deep lakes may have stimulated changes in diatom plankton that are recorded in sediments. We will study the recent sediments from two pristine lakes in the permafrost belt and use instrumental climate records to assess statistically the amount of variance in diatom data explained by climate, and we will use comparisons with modern plankton data from these sites in an attempt to explain the causes of change.
