- Abstract:
- Estimates of population differentiation based on DNA sequence will be combined with knowledge of current and past marine barriers to investigate the history of reptile and amphibian groups occurring around the westernmost Mediterranean. The following hypotheses will be tested: the barriers have been important in biogeography and evolution; group histories may involve both vicariance and dispersal; rates of morphological change vary radically and are 'uncoupled' from molecular change; molecular evolutionary rates of groups divided by the opening of the Gibraltar strait are similar; current taxonomy is appropriate. At least 1500 b.p. of mtDNA and nuclear DNA (cytochrome b, 12S rRNA, c-mos) will be analysed for over 350 samples from 26 separate clades.
