Abstract:
We propose building a prototype apparatus to study the long-term time-dependent deformation of rocks in a deep-sea laboratory. We aim is to extend the range of accessible creep strain rates beyond achievable laboratory rates to be able to discriminate between competing models of creep, and to increase confidence in predictions extrapolated to typical tectonic deformation rates. The advantage of experiments conducted in the deep sea is that we can guarantee stable constant stress over periods of weeks, months or even years. This is not practicable in a normal laboratory. We are collaborating with scientists from the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania, Sicily, who will be responsible for deploying the apparatus at their deep-water test site. We propose to perform a suite of time-dependent creep experiments with durations varying from a few weeks to up to six months, in order to extend the range of creep data to much lower strain rates than has previously been possible.
