Abstract:
This project will investigate the fluvial sediments and landforms of the Gediz river around Kula, western Turkey with three specific objectives:1)To provide detailed baseline data concerning the nature and extent of Late Cenozoic fluvial deposits within the study area. No previous studies of this fluvial sequence are known. 2)To place this fluvial record within a tightly constrained temporal framework allowing correlation with regional histories of crustal deformation and climate change. Intercalated basalt flows within the fluvial sequence allow geochronological study to be undertaken using Ar-Ar methods. 3)To provide a direct contribution, from a present data vacuum area, to IGCP-449 Global Correlation of Late Cenozoic fluvial deposits.
