Abstract:
Interactions of stress and chemistry control the effects of volume change during metamorphic reaction, rates of deformation by diffusion creep in rocks and other materials, interaction of chemically reactive fluids with permeable rocks through which they pass, and the effects of tectonic 'overpressure'. A single theory will be used to simulate rates of evolution in all these situations, using known thermodynamic and kinetic data. Qualitative system behaviour and sensitivity to poorly-known parameters will also be explored. A numerical scheme for solving the required equations will be implemented for an arbitrary grain boundary network geometry. This scheme will be equally applicable for situations when there is no large-scale stress (and small-scale stresses build up in response to phase change) and when there is large scale stress so the system deforms.
