Abstract:
In the case statement we provide first evidence that two generalist parasitoid species, attacking hosts in cynipid galls, use scents from the galls to locate the galls remotely and might even be able to distinguish galls by their scent. Here we propose sample volatile chemicals emitted by cynipid galls during the flight periods of the parasitoid species. We will use a wide range of parasitoid species throughout one season in olfactometer choice tests to establish their reaction to gall scents and thus their ability to remote sense. The chemicals collected will be analysed by GC/MS in collaboration with Prof J A Pickett FRS. This study could establish for the first time the wide use of plant- or gall-chemical cues for the long-range host location by polyphagous parasitoid species, a potentially powerful mechanism to structure parasitoid communities.
