Abstract:
The propagation of axisymmetric gravity currents in a system rotating about a vertical axis will be considered. The important new feature is the density stratification in the ambient fluid. This study will consider the evolution of the flow, which is relevant to geophysical, environmental and industrial circumstances. The investigators recently studied similar gravity current problems for non-stratified fluids, and this proposal is aimed at developing existing knowledge to incorporate the stratification effects. The two-year project will combine theoretical analysis involving numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes and shallow-water equations with experimental confirmation of the obtained results.
