- Abstract:
- Existing models of turbidity current flow dynamics rely heavily on laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling and interpretation of the rock record, and have not been tested extensively by quantitative examination of larger-scale, natural subaqueous underflows. This project will study the dynamics of turbidity currents in Lillooet Lake, Canada, where regular under and inter-flows occur during seasonal snowmelt. Acoustic Doppler profiling, echo-sounding and suspended sediment sampling will document three-dimensional velocity and sediment concentration in a range of turbidity underflows, their spatial/temporal variation, and investigate their interaction with channel/slump topography. The study will provide the first detailed quantification of such currents and allow testing of existing models of turbidity currents with data from a natural analogue.
