Abstract:
The toxicity of three chemicals, cypermethrin, enamectin benzoate and teflubenzuron, used in the treatment of sea lice (Copepoda: Caligidae), to four species of planktonic copepod will be assessed using laboratory and in situ bioassays. Juvenile and adult copepods will be used in laboratory toxicity tests incorporating a range of exposure times to reflect potential exposure scenarios during sea lice treatments on salmon farms. Copepods will be monitored post exposure for any long-term effects on survival and reproductive parameters. Life-cycle exposures starting with <24 h nauplii will assess sublethal effects on survival and reproduction. Copepods are to be used as sentinel species (indicator species representative of the marine environment) in novel in situ bioassays that will expose animals to toxicant plumes as sea lice chemicals are released from salmon farms. The use of in situ exposures allows a more environmentally realistic assessment of the toxicity of sea lice chemicals to planktonic copepods.
