- Abstract:
- The impact of biodiversity on ecosystem function has been a focus of recent research. Spatial heterogeneity is a characteristic of many ecosystems, but its effects on the biodiversity-ecosystem function relationship have not been addressed. This project will examine the role of heterogeneity and biodiversity in determining ecosystem function using an integrated modelling and experimental approach in an estuarine system. Mesocosm experiments will be used to determine: (1) biomass movement rates for three benthic macrofaunal species within and between habitat patches of different qualities and (2) the relationship between biomass composition and ecosystem function level within a patch. The experiments will be used to parameterise a spatial patch-based model. Model predictions will be tested against mesocosm experiments incorporating multiple habitat patches.
