- Abstract:
- An international team, which combines considerable resources and expertise in avian sensory science and avian energetics, will employ a range of experimental techniques with captive Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo to determine the visual and energetic factors that limit pursuit-dive foraging performance in these birds. Knowledge of these factors will be combined with field measurements of actual foraging behaviour in the field at particular study sites and with measures of the water characteristics (temperature, optical, and spectral properties) in which cormorants forage in various parts of their range. Our results will be combined to define the visual and energetic limits to pursuit-dive foraging performance under a range of natural environmental conditions. This will enhance understanding of the biological bases of the perceived conflicts between fish eating birds and human economic interests and inform their management.
