Abstract:
We plan to use the last 400 years of historical observations of the magnetic field (a unique database constructed and held at Leeds University) to generate a mathematical model representing the changes in the magnetic field generated in Earth's fluid core. We will use a new method to infer the morphology of the field at the top of the core, 2900km below Earth's surface. Preliminary studies indicate that the equatorial region may sustain wave motion. We will analyse the observational record, and carry out theoretical calculations, to ascertain whether such motion is extant in this region of the core. It is possible that such a difference in the dynamical regimes on the core surface will be discernable in palaeomagnetic data, indicating the state of the core over the last few million years. therefore we will develop a statistical model that will enable comparisons to be made with palaeomagnetic data from the last 5 million years.
