- Abstract:
- Ozone (O3) is a key trace gas in the Earth's atmosphere, acting as an essential filter of the sun's ultraviolet radiation and as an agent for the natural removal of atmospheric pollutants. Destruction of atmospheric ozone as a result of human activity is consequently an important environmental problem, and understanding the gaseous chemistry leading to atmospheric ozone loss is the overall goal of this research proposal. Specifically, the most important ozone destroying reactions involving chlorine - containing molecules, derived from chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) pollutants in the atmosphere, will be studied in the laboratory. This will be achieved by improving a state of the art laboratory technique for investigation of gas phase reactions, and results from this study will provide a far improved characterisation of the role of chlorine containing molecules in ozone depletion. Results from this study will be essential to other atmospheric scientists developing computational models of atmospheric composition. Models aim to interpret and replicate field measurements of atmospheric composition. Ultimately, model forecasts of changes in atmospheric composition - changes which can have profound environmental consequence- are used to direct the regulatory response. The validity of model forecasts is crucially dependent upon the accurate description of the gaseous chemistry involved, and the proposed work aims to provide this understanding.
