Abstract:
What prevents organisms from becoming 'Darwinian Demons', capable of reproducing copiously throughout infinite lifespans? In fact, reproduction, growth, repair and longevity are often negatively associated. A classic example is the 'trade-off' between reproduction and longevity in fruitflies. This trade-off is thought to exist because food resources are in limited supply and can be put into reproduction or long life, but not both. However, recent research in which reproduction and longevity have apparently been 'uncoupled', challenges this idea. The key aim of this project is to test if this challenge is real, by investigating the mechanisms underlying life-history trade-offs in male and female fruitflies. The recent revolution in genetic knowledge available for model organisms such as the fruitfly makes this an ideal time to investigate these competing ideas. The subject is also core to NERC's remit in promoting high quality basic research and training. The research will be based in state-of -the-art facilities at University College London. It will involve large-scale tests of the effect on longevity of blocking various reproductive processes of males and females. The project cost is #289,761 for the salaries of the dedicated research staff, equipment, consumables and conference travel to disseminate results on a national and international scale. The outputs will be high quality, basic research, dissemination of the results and research training for the staff involved.
