- Abstract:
- New developments in 2D micron-scale measurements in sediments of trace metals and sulfur by DGT (diffusive gradients in thin-films) have revealed microniche structure. We propose to measure, for the first time, isotopic ratios of Fe and S within microniches, to begin to unravel the detailed mechanisms that supply the remobilized metal. With its in built pre-concentration, element selection and simple matrix, DGT is an ideal partner for laser ablation and ICP with multicollector MS detection. In contrast to bulk measurements, there is a possibility that a relatively large isotopic variation can be observed within a microniche. Allied to elemental ratios, the isotope measurements will yield directly information about the relative roles of inorganic (redox, desorption, dissolution/precipitation) and biological (microbial activity) processes in the localised remobilisation of metals.
