- Abstract:
- The goal of this research is to understand and quantify the formation and growth of ice particles in cumulus clouds. We aim to do this by making measurements in cumulus congestus clouds with the new BAE 146 aircraft for atmospheric research and at the same time running the Met Office Cloud Resolving Model combined with a detailed cloud microphysics model. Significant improvements have recently been made to the models. Key instruments have recently been developed that will significantly improve our ability to detect and observe the number concentration, size and shape of small ice crystals. Together they provide a suite of very sophisticated equipment for investigating the origins and development of the ice phase in supercooled clouds.
