Abstract:
We aim to obtain the first detailed picture of the structure and dynamics of simple organic molecules in hydrated clays, at elevated temperatures and pressures. In the first instance we will focus on methanol, glycol and phenol. All of these molecules are of fundamental interest as hydrogen-bonders, and are of great practical importance. For example, glycol is widely used as an additive in oil-well drilling fluids, while phenol is very problematic as a groundwater pollutant. We will study several different clays, and will examine the role of cation valence and radius. With this in mind, our samples will contain the naturally abundant cations Na+, K+ and Ca++ and the important radionuclide Cs+. We will therefore be able to address several key technological and scientific issues concerning the properties of confined organic fluids and clay-fluid interactions.
