Abstract:
Saprotrophic cord-forming fungi play a central role in N cycling in temperate forest ecosystems. We will determine the relative ability of species with contrasting foraging strategies to redistribute nitrogen in relation to the sizes of spatially discrete C resources with varying C/N ratios, using photon-counting scintillation imaging in defined microcosms, combined with analysis of N redistribution using ecologically realistic systems and variables. Newly-discovered patterns in pulsed translocation in mycelial networks, including differentiation of same-phase domains, and the successive opening of translocation routes in pre-existing cords, will be investigated for a role in the coordination of mycelial foraging in patchy environments.
