Abstract:
This work will combine expertise in ornithology and the genetics and epidemiology of malaria to study the epidemiology of malaria in avian hosts. By developing molecular tools to study taxonomy of malaria parasites, and applying these to samples collected from wild birds in combination with field experiments we will: (1) Obtain detailed information about temporal and age-related variation in prevalence. (2) Determine the extent to which transmission occurs between migrant and resident bird species. (3) Establish the cost of malaria infection and the proximate determinants of infection probability. In combination, this work can offer important insights into the demography, and co-evolution, of malaria and its hosts.
